Personal
I'm am an Iowa native having been born and raised in the town of Elberon, a small rural community (pop. 200) located forty miles west of Cedar Rapids. As a boy and young man, I worked in our family's retail bulk oil and auto and farm services business and for local farmers and merchants. My youth included high school, milking cows and making hay, playing baseball, delivering newspapers, looking for that "field of dreams", and searching for meaning beyond small town America.
In 1964, my "field of dreams" took me to Boston to earn a graduate degree at Boston College, live in Boston's rundown South End and become a member of "Red Sox nation".
My family and I have lived in Wellesley, Lexington, Burlington, Peabody and Waltham in MA; Morrisville, PA; several communities in New Jersey; Dallas, TX and Clearwater, FL. We have been seasonal residents of Harwich on Cape Cod.
Before graduating from high school, I volunteered for the military draft. I served in the US Army's Fourth Division and Army Reserve, earned GI Bill benefits and graduated from Coe College (IA) with a BA in Economics, Boston College with a MSW in community planning and community organization and MIT's Sloan School of Management.
